About the P-51D and Bill Whisner
The P-51D Mustang combined speed, range and firepower in a design powered by a Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, allowing it to escort Allied bombers deep into enemy territory while armed with six .50-caliber machine guns. William T. Whisner Jr. flew the type with the 352nd Fighter Group, finishing World War II with 15.5 aerial victories and two Distinguished Service Crosses. He returned to combat in the Korean War, where he scored further victories flying the F-86 Sabre and earned a third Distinguished Service Cross.
