About Walter Hinchliffe
Walter "Hinch" Hinchliffe began his military career in a British Army artillery unit before joining the Royal Naval Air Service in 1916. After service as an instructor at Cranwell, he joined No. 10 Squadron RNAS at Teteghem near Dunkirk in January 1918, scoring his first victory in a Sopwith Camel on February 3, 1918. As commander of C Flight, he flew this distinctively marked aircraft, carrying a representation of the Liverpool coat of arms and the German phrase "Donner Wetter" (thunderstorm) on the fuselage, ending the war with six confirmed victories. After the war, Hinchliffe was lost without trace, along with passenger Elsie Mackay, during an attempt to fly the Atlantic in a Stinson Detroiter.
