About the Me 410 Hornisse
Developed as an improved successor to the troubled Me 210, the twin-engine Me 410 Hornisse featured a redesigned fuselage and more powerful Daimler-Benz engines. Introduced in 1943, it served as a bomber destroyer, reconnaissance aircraft, ground-attack platform and night fighter, though it grew increasingly vulnerable to Allied escort fighters such as the P-51 Mustang as the war progressed.
About Eduard Tratt
Hauptmann Eduard Tratt commanded II./Zerstorergeschwader 26, flying the Me 410 as a bomber destroyer against U.S. heavy-bomber formations over Germany. Credited with 38 aerial victories, most of them four-engine bombers, he was the highest-scoring Zerstorer (heavy-fighter) pilot of World War II and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves. Tratt was killed in action on February 22, 1944, while attacking a formation of B-17s near Nordhausen.
