About the Me 262
The world's first operational jet-powered fighter, the Messerschmitt Me 262 entered German service in 1944, powered by two Junkers Jumo turbojet engines that pushed it past 540 mph - far faster than any Allied piston-engine fighter. The A-2a "Blitz Bomber" variant adapted the airframe to carry bombs for fast, low-level strike missions. Armed with four 30mm cannons, the Me 262 gave the Luftwaffe a significant technological edge, though fuel shortages, engine reliability problems and limited production restricted its wartime impact.
