About the P-51A Mustang
Powered by an Allison V-1710 engine and armed with four wing-mounted .50-caliber Browning machine guns, the P-51A began reaching the USAAF and the British, who designated it the Mustang II, in late 1942. It served in air defense, bomber escort and tactical support roles before later Merlin-engined Mustang variants took over as the definitive versions of the aircraft.
