About the drill sequence
Most 18th-century drill manuals broke musket-loading into a dozen or so numbered steps; France's 1776 Ordonnance du Roi used 12. On the command "appretez vos armes" ("make ready"), the soldier moved the musket from the shouldered position, gripping it at the wrist while cocking the hammer, before awaiting the commands to present ("en joue") and fire ("feu"). The Royal Deux-Ponts, a French-officered regiment raised in the Duchy of Zweibrucken, served with Rochambeau's expeditionary force during the American Revolutionary War, including at the 1781 Siege of Yorktown.
