About the campaign
In spring 1864, Ulysses S. Grant took command of the Union Army of the Potomac, reinforced with Ambrose Burnside's IX Corps to roughly 120,000 men, with orders to destroy Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Beginning on May 3, 1864, Grant's forces engaged Lee's army in a series of battles over six weeks, including the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna and Cold Harbor, before crossing the James River to move on Petersburg. Although Grant did not destroy Lee's army or capture Richmond outright, the sustained pressure of the campaign contributed to the eventual collapse of the Confederacy.
