About the campaign
Control of the Mississippi River was central to the Union's strategy of blockading Southern ports and controlling the inland waterways, and Ulysses S. Grant concluded that capturing Vicksburg was the next step toward that goal. Working closely with the U.S. Navy's Mississippi Squadron under David Dixon Porter, Grant's forces contended with Confederate commander John C. Pemberton for control of Mississippi and eastern Louisiana. Limited resources, thin staffing and a Confederate government focused on the war in the east left Pemberton's position increasingly untenable as the Confederacy's hold on the Mississippi River came apart.
