About the campaign
After earlier attempts to reach high ground near Vicksburg were stalled by swampy terrain and Confederate Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's defenses, Grant marched his corps down the Louisiana side of the river while Porter ran his gunboats past Vicksburg's batteries, enabling a crossing of the Mississippi and an approach on the city from the east that ended with its surrender on July 4, 1863.
