The Grumman TBM Avenger was a rugged, carrier-based torpedo bomber widely used by the United States during the Second World War. Originally developed as the TBF by Grumman and later produced by General Motors as the TBM, it featured a large, mid-wing monoplane design with folding wings for carrier storage. Powered by a Wright R-2600 radial engine, the Avenger carried a crew of three and was armed with a forward-firing machine gun, a dorsal turret gun, and a ventral position, along with a torpedo or bombs in its internal bay. It played a decisive role in major Pacific battles, including Midway and Leyte Gulf. Durable and versatile, the Avenger also excelled in anti-submarine warfare and continued serving in postwar roles.
