About the P-38 Lightning
Designed under Lockheed engineer Kelly Johnson, the twin-boom, twin-engine P-38 first flew in 1939 and entered combat in 1942. Powered by two Allison V-1710 engines and armed with a 20mm cannon and four .50-caliber machine guns grouped in the nose, it excelled at long-range escort, high-altitude interception and ground attack, and P-38s of the 339th Fighter Squadron flew the April 1943 mission that shot down Adm. Isoroku Yamamoto's aircraft over Bougainville. The type served in both the Pacific and European theaters through the end of World War II.
