The Mitsubishi A6M2 Model 21 Zero was the primary carrier-based fighter of the Imperial Japanese Navy during the early years of World War II. Introduced in 1940, it gained a formidable reputation for its exceptional maneuverability, long range, and impressive climb rate. Powered by a Nakajima Sakae radial engine, the A6M2 carried two 20 mm cannons and two machine guns, giving it significant firepower for its time. The Zero dominated many early Pacific battles, including Pearl Harbor and the Philippines campaign. However, its light construction and lack of armor made it increasingly vulnerable as Allied fighter technology improved.
