About the Bf 109
Introduced in 1937 by Messerschmitt, the Bf 109 formed the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter force throughout World War II, flying in every major theater where Germany fought. Various Daimler-Benz inverted V-12 engines gave it a strong climb rate and high-altitude performance, and its armament grew from machine guns to cannon as the war progressed.
About Hans-Joachim Marseille
Born in 1919, Marseille flew the Bf 109 with Jagdgeschwader 27 in the North African campaign, where his marksmanship and unorthodox flying style earned him 158 confirmed aerial victories, nearly all against Allied aircraft over Libya and Egypt. Nicknamed the "Star of Africa," he was awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. Marseille died in September 1942 after his aircraft suffered engine failure; he was struck by his own tail while bailing out.
